Objectives
When endoscopic ultrasonography was introduced in clinical practice, now 20 years ago, it was designed as a pure diagnostic imaging method. In the past decade however, there has been a shift in indications for EUS from diagnostic to interventional. Today interventional EUS is a valuable method in the daily gastroenterological practice. Many patients have been kept away exploratory laparotomies after EUS-guided FNA had proven, for instance, metastatic lymph nodes near the celiac axis. At the same time diagnostic EUS has in some areas felt the strong competition from improved CT and MR techniques.
As it happened last year, we are again organizing a one day workshop on interventional EUS. During this workshop experts will show you their technique and current state of affairs will be reviewed in short lectures with ample time for discussion. We are again very pleased to announce that one of the pioneers in interventional EUS, Maurits J. Wiersema, is willing to participate in our workshop. Maurits J. Wiersema, born in the Netherlands, moved to the United States at a very young age. He attended medical school in Indianapolis and specialised in Gastro-enterology.
The course is meant, not only, for beginners but also for those already experienced in the field. The accent of this one-day meeting will be on interaction between faculty and participants both during the live-demonstrations and during the lectures. To ensure a low threshold for interaction the number of participants will be limited to approximately 25. We hope to see you in Amsterdam in February 2003!
